Qualcomm working on Snapdragon 805 dual-camera reference design

updated 04:49 am EDT, Mon May 26, 2014

Snapdragon 805 could help device producers with advanced photography features

The upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 will enable more mobile device manufacturers to offer depth-sensing dual-camera systems in their devices, according to a report. Senior director for cameras and imaging Tim Yates revealed Qualcomm is working on a reference design that would make it easier to create smartphones and tablets with similar photographic abilities to the HTC One M8.

Using a pair of ISPs, the Snapdragon 805 can process image data from two sources at the same time, reports Slashgear. Yates suggested this could be used by manufacturers to capture 16-megapixel burst photographs at 15fps and 4K video at 30fps simultaneously, using two separate imaging sensors. The processor is also capable of performing 3D noise reduction on video footage, and digital image stabilization using the processor's built-in gyroscope.

Yates suggests the image processing technology in the Snapdragon 805 could make the processor and its successors, the Snapdragon 810 and 808, more relevant in other areas, though still images are not the only focus of Yates' work. The company is also working on a directional microphone array, allowing the user to specifically isolate a specific section of the frame to target for audio recording, while filtering out all other sound.

The Snapdragon 805 is expected to use a Krait 450 CPU ran at up to 2.5GHz per core with up to 25.6GBps memory bandwidth, and support for LTE Category 4 with peak data rates of 150Mbps.
