Application to gain artificial intelligence to find better location search results

Last week it was announced that Nokia's Here Maps have acquired the team behind the artificial intelligence (AI)-driven travel app Desti. Here plans to use the software to create better search results to help push the evolution of mapmaking. Desti was created as out of the same research center that spawned Apple's Siri and Nuance.

By acquiring Desti, Here will obtain a method for a better search through its large database of information it already has. Rather than trying to find a better way to narrow down the search, the company could be looking towards more prediction or adaptive suggestions using the knowledge the AI can learn. The software as it stands attempts to create a natural dialogue with its users, even going as far as conversing with the user to explain why the results are relevant.

The technology behind Desti allowed for more precise information to be delivered to users relevant to the request made. Instead of coming up with a list of related places to a request, AI is used to mine information to find the best pieces. The software uses natural language processing to analyze the context of the request, crafting results best suited to the individual.

"At Here, we match people with the places that matter to them, so that they feel like a local wherever they are," said Here Vice President of Search and Places Don Zereski. "We want to create a new class of location services that implicitly understands who you are and what you're looking for, sometimes even before you ask."

Details on the acquisition were not disclosed in the release.
