Sprint announces it will host a 'happy connecting' event on June 23

updated 04:31 pm EDT, Tue June 3, 2014

Few details issued on the Chicago event, could be wireless network upgrades

Invitations were sent out today from Sprint indicating that the company is getting ready to make some kind of announcement later this month. Details on the event are extremely limited, but if the picture attached the invitation is any indication, new information on Sprint's network should be expected. The event kicks off in Chicago on June 23.

With the focus on connected points between activities in daily life, Sprint could be looking to announce that it is doing some much-needed upgrades to its wireless network. The company hasn't upgraded its network for LTE coverage as fast as some would like. Sprint's LTE offerings are still far behind that of AT&T and Verizon in both areas covered and number of people served. Even though they sit as the third largest carrier in the United States, T-Mobile is trying to quickly gain ground to capture Sprint's spot. A large network upgrade or expansion is just what Sprint could use to stay competitive.

Sprint's previous event in April was thought to unveil the company's jump into HD voice, but turned out to yield news on music and some LTE growth. During the press event, the company showed off the HTC One M8 Harman Kardon edition, and new music options including Spotify subscriptions for account holders. The company also talked about Sprint Spark and LTE expansion to 41 additional cities.
