iOS 8 skips Yahoo as partner for Weather app

updated 05:16 pm EDT, Tue June 3, 2014

Pulls data directly from Weather Channel

As of iOS 8, Apple has stopped using Yahoo as the data source for the iOS Weather app, users note. The app now lists The Weather Channel as a source instead. Yahoo was already pulling its own data from TWC, but Apple appears to have cut out Yahoo for business and/or technical reasons.

There is a difference in the way the iOS 8 app displays weather. It for instance uses a nine-day forecast, rather than just five days, and includes a brief summary paragraph describing current conditions along with the day's outlook.

During the past year reports have hinted that Apple and Yahoo might go in the opposite direction and establish closer ties. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has argued that Yahoo should be the default search engine in iOS and OS X, something Apple might be amenable to as a way of excluding Google. Google is still a vastly more popular search engine than Yahoo though, and Apple might risk alienating its userbase.
