Pro x2 612 gives business computing flexibility in desktop replacement, single tablet options

Computer manufacturer HP has unleashed a new tablet PC that is poised to fit in with the growth of computer options in the enterprise sector. The HP Pro x2 612 gives buyers a new level of flexibility, says the company, the first of its kind at the business level. With the PC, business customers "will have a computer that they can use at their desk, or something they can carry with them without having to change machines," according to a press release. The core of the machine is a 12.5-inch touchscreen Windows 8.1 tablet that can be placed into a keyboard dock to give enterprise users a desktop replacement.

At the heart of the computer is either an Intel Celeron 2961Y 1.1 GHz, Pentium 3561Y 1.2 GHz, Core i3 4012Y 1.5 GHz or Core i5 4202Y or 4302Y 1.5 GHz processor with Intel HD 4200 graphics. The HP Pro x2 612 also comes with either 4GB or 8GB of DDR3L 1600 MHz RAM.

Storage options for the Pro x2 range from 64GB to 256GB M.2 SATA-3 solid state drives, or a 180GB or 256GB self encrypting drive. Other specs of the machine include Qualcomm Gobi 4G LTE, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0, two front-facing speakers and a 2.0 megapixel front-facing and a five-megapixel rear HD camera. A suite of security software and options, including fingerprint reader, also come with the device.

Since the HP Pro x2 612 is a sort of cross between a tablet and a notebook, users can dock the tablet into the Power Keyboard. Inside of the keyboard is an additional battery which, when combined with the one in the tablet, gives the system a total runtime of 14 hours. Battery life for the tablet alone is around eight hours. The dock also contains a number of ports in it, including VGA, DisplayPort, Ethernet, two USB 3.0 ports along with a side-docking connector for the HP Ultraslim dock.

Additional options for the HP Pro x2 612 include a mobile keyboard and a pen to be used with the device. The mobile keyboard is a soft, backlight keyboard that contains a single USB 3.0 port, power connector and combo audio jack. The pen comes with 1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity, thanks to the Wacom technology behind it.

The tablet portion of the machine can also be purchased as a standalone, listed as the HP Pro Tablet 612. The HP Pro x2 612 will be available starting in September.
