Dell unleashes three new UItrasharp widescreen multimedia monitors

updated 03:25 pm EDT, Wed June 4, 2014

Ultrasharp monitors up to 27-inches come with 2.0-megapixel webcams, built-in speakers

Three new monitors in Dell's Ultrasharp line have given customers in the market for a new display some options to consider. The new models feature sizes from 21.5 to 27 inches, with integrated 2.0-megapixel webcams, built-in speakers and dual-digital headphone/microphone combo jacks. Each monitor is said to be Full HD (1920x1080) and have a 178-degree viewing angle. Input options include VGA, HDMI (MHL) for use with tablets and smartphones, DisplayPort and USB 3.0.

The smallest, the 21.5-inch UZ2215GH, is an IPS LED-backlit model that runs at a native resolution of 1920x1080 at 60 Hz. It supports 16.7 million colors, with a contrast ratio of 1000:1 / 8000000:1 dynamic and brightness of 250 cd/m2. Response time is only 8ms, but refresh rates range from 56-76 Hz vertical and 30-83 kHz horizontal. The UZ2215GH has one VGA, a single DisplayPort, two HDMI ports and three USB 3.0 ports ,with one being only for upstream. Speakers for the unit rank at three watts total.

In the middle of the pack of Ultrasharp monitors is the 23-inch UZ2315H. Specs for the model are similar to what is found in the UZ2215GH, but offers a slightly larger size with a bit more brightness. Brightness for the model is raised to 300 cd/m2. Operational power consumption for the monitor is also the same as the 21.5-inch version at 60 watts.

As the largest of the announced models, the UZ2715H gets a price boost to match the 27-inch display. Not much changes from the UZ2315H model, other than the unit getting a bump in the power of the speakers to go along with the larger viewable size. Speakers get a five watt treatment, up from the pair of three watt speakers in the smaller monitors.

Each monitor is also optimized for Microsoft Lync, giving them a little more flexibility for the business market. All three models are currently available from Dell's website, but won't be shipping until June 18. Prices start at $280 for the UZ2215H and jump to $450 for the UZ2715H.

I like everything about this, but the 27" has low resolution. (Why the same as for the 21.5 and the 23"? Even less than my U2410)
