Announcement planned for that month, not September, sources say
The iWatch is indeed on track to ship in October, as suggested by Nikkei, sources tell Re/code. The people say that while things could change, Apple is currently planning to showcase the device during a special event that month. Unmentioned by Re/code is whether the watch will actually ship in the same timeframe.
The sources do add that the iWatch should thoroughly exploit the HealthKit platform built into iOS 8. That would support widespread accounts that the product will include a variety of health and fitness sensors, and possibly Nikkei's assertion that it will run a modified version of iOS.
Earlier this week, Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Brian White speculated on a September announcement, based on word that production of some components will start later this month and accelerate going into the fall. The latter point may still be consistent with an October window.
