Omron Okao Vision claimed to power 3D effect in rumored Amazon smartphone

Amazon's rumored smartphone, expected to launch on June 18th, uses Okao Vision technogy in order for its 3D functionality to work, according to a report. Created by Omron and modified by Amazon's engineers, Okao Vision will allow the smartphone to track the user's face for navigating the user interface, thanks to a collection of four front-mounted infrared cameras.

Techcrunch claims Okao will combine the data from the camera with the phone's gyro sensor and accelerometer to process smartphone movements in relation to the face. Omron's software is also capable of recognizing faces, and determining an age range, likely gender, and estimate the ethnicity of the user, but it is unclear if any of these features will be included in the Amazon device at launch.

The eventual result of the technology will let viewers see an object or menu on the phone's display, with a slight tilt of the phone bringing extra menus into view or changing the angle of the object, effectively providing a glasses-free 3D effect.

Aside from the 3D capabilities, the Amazon smartphone is believed to ship with a 4.7-inch 720p display and a rear 13-megapixel camera, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor running a version of Amazon's Android fork, FireOS. Rumors have also suggested Amazon is working on a specialized data plan for the device called Prime Data, which could allow Amazon to offer customers free data allocations to use Amazon-purchased digital content.
