Plexturbo takes on Samsung's RAPID for faster writing, cache writing to stop data loss

Plextor, a company known for its storage devices, has announced a new solid state drive (SSD) with first looks taking place at Computex last week. The M6 Pro is the first drive to pass an enterprise standard of testing from the company, bringing new levels of reliability in a consumer-level device. The SSD will operate at a maximum SATA III throughput of 6Gbps. It will also make use of Plextor's caching software, Plexturbo.

The M6 Pro was put through Plextor's "zero error" standard of testing. The company tested 400 units of the SSD under strict enterprise-grade conditions to reach a survival level of 1,008 hours, which is up from 500 hours. According to Anandtech, the drive makes use of a Marvell 88SS9187 controller and A19nm NAND from Toshiba. The drive will also feature a DEVSLP mode that reduces power consumption.

Plexturbo has made its way to the new drive, bringing with it new caching capabilities that leverage the SSD DRAM cache, SSD storage and system memory. Plextor says that the technology delivers "additional storage speed for real-world applications, intelligently extends flash life and prevents data loss if power is interrupted."

Plexturbo is the company's take on a similar technology from Samsung called RAPID. The difference from RAPID is that Plexturbo will use system RAM as a write-through cache. Anandtech, which spent some time with the drive at Computex, points out that this equates to the data being written to the SSD and RAM at the same time. This means that Plexturbo has a less chance at data loss, especially if power lost. However, it will still be limited to 1GB of RAM for operation, the same as Samsung's RAPID technology. With Plexturbo transfer rates were witnessed up to 10GB per second by the publication, but it was said that the technology was geared for higher benchmark scores.

Plexturbo will only be available in the M6 Pro SSD for the time being. Information on the capacity of the drives and pricing has yet to be released from Plextor. If information from the Consumer Electronics Show hasn't changed, the SSD will be available in 128 to 512GB capacities.
