Nike releases Android version of FuelBand app two years after iOS

updated 01:51 pm EDT, Tue June 17, 2014

Companion app for Nike FuelBand SE compatible with all Android 4.3 devices

Nike has finally released an Android version of the Nike+ FuelBand app, two years after it launched the iOS version, and far later than initially anticipated. The app works with the company's FuelBand SE wrist-based fitness tracker, allowing users to monitor their NikeFuel score and other functions the sports brand introduced in the original companion app.

The app links to the online Nike+ profile, which it updates periodically with the user's score from the device, thanks to its Bluetooth 4.0 connection. A daily goal can be set and updated from within the app, with NikeFuel generation for specific activities and movement reminders also available, along with a scoreboard to compare the user with others in their social network.

The original Nike FuelBand is not supported by the app, forcing potential users to acquire the latest version. Said to work on all Android 4.3 devices, the app is apparently optimized for use with the Samsung Galaxy S3, Galaxy S4, Galaxy S5, HTC One, Motorola Moto X, and Google Nexus 5.

The launch of the Android app was unexpected, in part due to its delayed release. Since the original iOS app was launched, Nike has fired a large contingent of employees from its Digital Sport division, effectively canceling a newer version of the band due in the fall.
