Oyster available for Android devices, updated for iOS

E-book subscription service Oyster has released its platform for Android devices, as well as Kindle Fire and Nook HD e-readers. Typography, layouts, a refreshed color palette and other refinements are included with the release; Oyster's four themes have been revised alongside the new Wythe theme designed for outdoor reading. Book details now include a "read time" estimation for how long it will take to finish a book, and the color palette becomes complementary to the cover imagery. Editor's notes for top titles offer between 100 and 300 characters, from publications such as The Huffington Post, The New Yorker, NPR and more.

Available for iOS since last year, Oyster has released today's updated features to the app version available on iTunes. Downloading Oyster for iOS or Android is free, and requires an Oyster subscription to access book content. A 30-day free trial is available for prospective subscribers.

Spotify launches expanded Web API

Spotify has announced the launch of its new Web API, allowing partners the ability to build apps on its platform. The platform is a product of Spotify and The Echo Nest's integration, and can create music apps on top of Spotify as opposed to starting from the beginning. The music streaming service has provided developers with access to creating and adding to Spotify playlists with a user's permission, and enables saving to Spotify from any application or website. Track, album and artist details from the Spotify catalog can be retrieved, including cover art and 30-second track previews. It is recommended that any existing code be migrated to the new Web API to utilize its richer metadata.
