Deal roundup: cheap apps, inexpensive hardware for June 20, 2014
With the arrival of summer comes the pitter-patter of little (or big!) feet returning from school for the summer. Roadtrips demand new apps, and sometimes, new hardware. Every Friday afternoon, we're going to take a look at sales, and bring you what we think are some of the best deals on prime apps, gadgets, and peripherals for you, the discriminating MacNN and Electronista reader. All prices are verified at the time of publication, and any sales may not be valid if you're reading a few days down the line. Check pricing before you click buy!
Space Hulk - iPad
We looked at Space Hulk over the Christmas holiday. Space Hulk is set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, and draws a certain degree of inspiration from the Alien movies. In the turn-based game, a "Space Hulk" is a mass of ancient, derelict starships, asteroids, and other assorted space debris, which a group of Space Marine Terminators is sent to investigate. A player takes the role of these Terminators, while the iPad controls the Genestealers, an aggressive alien species who have made their home aboard the Hulk.
We weren't expecting a sale any time soon. Right now, Space Hulk is temporarily on sale for $4, down from the regular price of $10.
Binary Nights' ForkLift and Locko - OS X
Many users would be surprised how useful a good FTP program can turn out to be, and of course a password manager these days is pretty much mandatory, since so many sites now require reasonably-strong passwords that are intentionally difficult to guess or remember. Forklift is a well-regarded FTP program for the Mac among several good competitors, but we've always been partial to its strong OS X-compliant interface.
At $20, we thought it was worth the money - but for a limited time, buyers can pick it up for 95 percent off, just $1 on the Mac App Store. While you're there, check out BN's other program, Locko - a new Mac-only password manager that features iCloud (and Dropbox) sync, import from 1Password and a great interface. It doesn't have an iOS version (yet), but one is coming soon. It also is priced at $1 on the Mac App Store for a limited time.
Tetris - iPad
Do you really need an explanation of what this is? As part of a larger EA sale, classic game Tetris for the iPad has been cut to $1 from $3.
Also, all Halfbrick titles, including the assortment of Fruit Ninja titles, are free on the iOS App Store. Sure, they're laden with in-app purchases, but they're all great fun even without shelling out a dime for extras.
Equinux Mail Designer - OS X
Developer Equinux has been making applications and utilities for the Mac for a long time. In advance of a new version, the first version of the HTML email generator Mail Designer has been slashed to $10 from its previous $35 price. Great for email lists, sales, and other promotions!
Inpaint 5 - OS X
Inpaint is a simple photography editing tool for OS X which allows the user to "magically" remove unwanted objects and people from photos. We've used it a little, and found it to work pretty well not only on people in frame, but also folds, scratches, and other problems. Inpaint 5 is normally $10, but is on sale for $2 until June 23.
Samsung 840 EVO SSD
We examined the 750GB version of this last year, and found that even at full price, the price to performance benefit was outstanding. We're seeing the lowest price we've witnessed yet on this drive. Nearly the entire range is on steep sale, with the 120GB on sale for $79 ($0.66 per GB), 250GB selling for $135 ($0.54 per GB), the 500GB for $250 ($0.50 per GB), and the huge 1TB for $400 ($0.40 per GB).
Seiki Digital 65-inch 4k television
We've spoken of the upcoming 4K flood. Leading the way with the big boys is newcomer Seiki. For this weekend, Walmart has cut the price of the Seiki Digital 4K television (model SE65UY04 ) to $999, the lowest we've seen. Sure, it's got three HDMI inputs and no analog, but we've seen 65-inch 1080p television at higher prices. Shipping seems to be an additional $70 regardless of US destination.
