Microsoft increases OneDrive free storage to 15GB, cuts prices

updated 01:46 pm EDT, Mon June 23, 2014

More storage provided to Office 365 subscriptions, lower costs for extra capacity

Microsoft is becoming more aggressive in the cloud storage market against Google, by making a number of changes aimed at attracting more users. The free allocation of OneDrive storage will be doubled from 7GB to 15GB, bringing the service in line with Google Drive, with Microsoft also making some changes to storage included with Office 365 and its paid storage options.

Office 365 owners will see their free allocations increased from 20GB to 1TB, with Office 365 Home subscriptions splitting the storage between up to five users, while Office 365 Personal and University will offer 1TB per subscription. Previously, only OneDrive for Business offered that capacity of online storage.

Subscription options for storage has seen its second change this year, following earlier alterations in February. Monthly subscription costs will be $1.99 for 100GB and $3.99 for 200GB, down from the current $7.49 and $11.49 respectively. Microsoft states it will be rolling out the changes in the next month, with current subscribers automatically moving to the lower prices.

The move by Microsoft comes just days before Google I/O, a venue where Google may announce more savings on its cloud storage. In changes made in March, Google offered 100GB of storage at $1.99 per month, with 1TB priced at $9.99, and 10TB at $99.99. Popular competitor Dropbox prices its storage at $9.99 per month for 100GB, $19.99 for 200GB, and $49.99 for 500GB, with yearly payment options also available.

Dropbox is looking awfully pricey (and stingy with the free space) these days.
