Report: 12-inch MacBook Air starting production in third quarter

updated 09:17 am EDT, Tue June 24, 2014

Thought to be similar in design to current Airs

Apple's rumored 12-inch MacBook Air will enter mass production by Quanta Computer in the third quarter, sources tell Digitimes. As for specifications, the sources claim that it will have at least some internal changes, affecting layout and the battery. External design should be similar to current 11- and 13-inch Airs. It's still not clear though if the machine will have an anticipated Retina display, which would finally put the Air on par with Apple's other mobile products.

Other reports have hinted not only at a Retina display but quieter fanless cooling, and a trackpad without a mechanical button. It's possible that only the 12-inch laptop will get these features, but the Digitimes sources add that they haven't heard of any modifications to the 11- and 13-inch designs.

I've got a Retina iPad 3 and wouldn't have anything else. No Retina MBA, no purchase by me. I can wait.

This is the most ridiculous rumor of the current lot. No chance in hell. 11, 12, and 13 inch? Please. Maybe as a replacement for 11", with the 13" moving up to 15". But still: I don't see any of that.

What I could imagine is a 12" (or 13") iPad. But that rumor seems to have died down recently.

Inkling, the rumor is it will have Retina. Regardless, this rumor is from Digitimes. It may as well come from the Tooth Fairy.

I can't believe this is true. If it is then Apple is headed down the road it was headed in the pre-Jobs 2.0-1990s, with like a dozen slightly different versions of the Mac. 11" and 13" are enough for an ultralight. I could see maybe a 15"... MAYBE. A 12"? Stupid.
