Walmart to cut iPhone 5s, 5c on-contract prices permanently

updated 09:33 pm EDT, Thu June 26, 2014

In prelude to next iPhone, retailer to slash prices to $99, $29 respectively

Walmart is planning to again permanently lower prices on the current iPhone models, cutting the cost of an iPhone 5s on contract to $99, a drop from its previously-discounted price of $149. The iPhone 5c will see an even more dramatic drop, down to $29 from $49. At most other outlets, the 5s sells for $199 and the iPhone 5c for $99 with a two-year contract commitment. The permanent new pricing is said to take effect beginning tomorrow, but only for in-store sales rather than Walmart's online store.

The new prices applies to 16GB models only, with no word of whether larger capacity versions would be available with similar sale pricing, reports Engadget. No other Apple products are affected by the price change according to the source for the story, an unnamed "Walmart spokesperson."

The company has been aggressive on offering up-front discounts on the cost of an iPhone, and offers service through all four major US carriers. There is no word on whether the promotion is limited to just Walmart's US stores or if similar pricing will be enacted in stores in other countries, such as Canada.

I don't know why anybody would buy a 16gb iPhone unless you don't plan on loading much music or ANY movies on it... glad to hear (the rumor) that Apple is going to cut the 16gb models for the upcoming iPhone 6.

A 16gb iPhone would make a good test platform for iOS app development.

I dunno about that. The biggest thing I store in my iPhone is photos and some apps are pretty hefty. Music and movies? None. I stream everything.

And a $50 discount is not enough to get me to patronize WalMart. Pure evil.
