Apple developing first-party HomeKit hardware, report says

updated 12:54 pm EDT, Thu June 26, 2014

Products 'beyond the exploratory phase'

Apple is planning to go beyond supporting third parties and offer its own HomeKit hardware, sources note. The people remark that the company has formed a team to work on the products, which it wants to heavily integrate with existing Apple devices. While development could halt at any time, Apple is said to be "beyond the exploratory phase."

Yet to be leaked is what categories the products might fall under. The sources do comment though that Apple is unlikely to compete with the thermostats and smoke detectors built by companies like Nest, since it feels that it can make gear with wider appeal. Some possibilities may include home control panels, or elaborate speaker systems.

HomeKit is in fact claimed to have been developed with first-party hardware in mind. No release windows have been mentioned, but they will at least have to wait for the fall launch of iOS 8, on which HomeKit is based.
