Microsoft India tweet points to imminent Windows Phone 8.1 update release

Windows Phone 8.1 could be shipping to smartphones next month. A posting on Twitter by Microsoft India states the Windows Phone 8.1 update will "roll out to existing Windows Phone 8 users during the first two weeks of July," suggesting that features such as the long-awaited Cortana virtual assistant may reach consumers in the near future.

The posting spotted by Ubergizmo does not specify if the time frame offered by Microsoft covers just India or if it applies to a wider market, or a global release. Microsoft has yet to provide an official download date for the upgrade, though it is expected to be released sometime this summer. Currently, the Nokia Lumia 630 and Lumia 635 ship with Windows Phone 8.1 pre-installed, while developers are able to install it onto their own Windows Phone 8 devices.

Aside from Cortana, Windows Phone 8.1 introduces Word Flow writing, improved notifications in Action Center, an altered camera app, and increased personalization options. A support document uncovered yesterday suggests that app folders on the Start Screen could be a future addition to the mobile operating system.
