updated 09:40 pm EDT, Sat July 5, 2014

Akvis Pastel released, available as standalone app and Photoshop plug-in filter

Akvis has announced the release of Pastel, a photo-to-painting image editor available for both Windows and OS X. Offering a variety of presets as well as detailed setting options, users of Pastel can create images that appear as though they are paintings from digital or scanned photographs. Its adjustable effect parameters function as an artistic filter, with advanced brush tools that assist in refining the result.

Pastel allows for selecting what textured surface the simulated painting is to have, with options including sanded paper, brick wall, and more. Its Batch Processing option allows artistic effects to be applied to an entire folder of images if desired. Available as a 10-day demo, the full version of Akvis Pastel v1.0 is priced at $50.

Popjam app offers kid-friendly alternative to existing social media

Mind Candy has launched Popjam, a new social network aimed at children aged 7-12, aiming to provide a safer alternative to other popular social entertainment tools like Snapchat, Facebook and Tumblr. PopJam is available for iOS and Android devices, and features the ability to create art with stickers, doodles and photos that can then be shared with friends. Popjam is currently available to users in the UK and Australia, with no word yet on a North American release schedule.
