Google updates Chromecast app for Android with screen mirroring

updated 03:36 pm EDT, Wed July 9, 2014

Android users can stream smartphone display to Chromecast

Google is starting to roll out Chromecast screen mirroring to Android devices. Previously only available through Chrome for desktop, and demonstrated at Google I/O last month, the function lets smartphone users display what's on their screen on a nearby television via the Chromecast, with the update beginning to appear on devices via an update to the Chromecast app.

Version 1.7 of the app adds a new "Cast Screen" option in the side navigation drawer, with the Chromecast app also being used to disassociate the two screens. The app will initially work with only a small number of devices, including the Nexus 4, 5, 10, and 2013-edition Nexus 7, the Samsung Galaxy S4 and S5, Note 3, Note 10, HTC One M7, LG G Pro 2, G2, and G3, though the support page states more devices will be able to mirror their display soon. Currently, iOS devices are not supported for screen casting through Chromecast at all.

Other features set to make an appearance on the Chromecast in the future includes the option to push content to the device without being connected to the same network, and the ability to personalize the standby photo feed.
