Shinyang Electronics audit finds 15 violations of child labor laws
Samsung has come under fire for use of underage employees at one of its Chinese supplier factories. Watchdog group China Labor Watch alleges that it has found children and underage students at Shinyang Electronics in Dongguan, China -- contrary to a June 30 report by the company which found no violations by the Korean hardware giant.
The workers are generally employed in peak manufacturing times, when the company is in "urgent need of labor." Working hours extend for 10 or 11 hours, with less than that paid, over a six-month period. Workers found by China Labor Watch were generally 15 years old, and using other people's documentation.
China Labor Watch says of Samsung labor audits that "after allegedly inspecting hundreds of suppliers, Samsung did not find one child worker. Yet in just one Samsung supplier factory, CLW has uncovered several children employed without labor contracts." The group reports that at least 15 sets of labor violations were discovered.
Samsung had little to say about the discovery, saying only that "we are urgently looking into the latest allegations and will take appropriate measures in accordance with our policies to prevent any cases of child labor in our suppliers." It added that "we are moving as fast as possible to address the labor-related issues that have been identified from our own and third-party audits."
The executive director of the China Labor Watch Li Qiang said that "Samsung's social responsibility reports are just advertisement. Samsung has put its energy into audits and the production of these reports, but these things are meant to appease investors and don't have any real value for workers. Samsung's monitoring system is ineffective, and has failed to bring about improvements for workers. What Samsung says is not important; what's important is their actions."
