Optical zoom in Pentax XG-1 extends to 208-times magnification with digital assistance

Ricoh has launched a new bridge camera with a long optical zoom and similar physical styling to DSLR cameras. The Pentax XG-1 houses a 16-megapixel back-illuminated 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor with a maximum sensitivity of ISO 3200, behind a 52-times optical zoom lens giving 35mm-equivalent focal lengths from a 24mm ultra-wide-angle to a 1,248mm super telephoto lens.

Sporting an aperture range of f/2.8 to f/5.6, the XG-1 is also capable of a 1cm (0.2-inch) Macro mode, while at the other end of its zoom range, its digital zoom extends existing optical zoom to approximately 208 times magnification, or a maximum 35mm format equivalent of 4,992mm. The camera also boasts a shake reduction system for clearer images, a standard continuous shooting mode of 9fps, a high-speed mode at 30fps for a 4-megapixel image, or at a VGA resolution, 60fps.

Video recording modes include Full HD resolution video at 30fps, with the user able to switch to one of eight digital filters while recording. A high-speed movie mode for slow-motion playback is included, as well as a micro-HDMI terminal for outputting movies to an external video source. The XG-1 also boasts HDR and other modes, including pet detection, a flash, a 200k-dot electronic viewfinder, and a 460k-dot 3-inch rear LCD screen. While it does not include built-in networking, it does include support for the Eye-Fi Wi-Fi SD memory card.

Ricoh is shipping the Pentax XG-1 to the United Kingdom in mid-August for £250 ($430), and is likely to go on sale in other markets shortly after.
