Samsung ponders over possible $200M SmartThings acquisition

updated 10:33 am EDT, Wed July 16, 2014

SmartThings purchase would bolster Samsung Internet of Things efforts

Samsung may be looking to acquire a home automation company, in order to bolster its home automation efforts. Shortly after joining up with the Thread Group to work on a wireless networking protocol for the "Internet of Things," the electronics giant is said to be in the process of purchasing SmartThings, with the deal said to be worth around $200 million.

Sources of TechCrunch claim the deal is not quite complete, but it is apparently close to fruition. SmartThings produces a central hub which connects to other sensors, switches, and other devices over a local network. The system is able to trigger actions based on various triggers, such as motion sensors triggering lights to turn on, while a mobile app provides remote control and monitoring of the home.

It is suggested the purchase will bring Samsung on par with other tech companies in terms of home automation, such as Google with Nest and Apple with HomeKit. At the start of this year, Samsung laid out plans for its connected home vision, dubbed Smart Home, which shares a number of aspects with SmartThings. The system would tie together direct device control and monitoring functions into one central cloud-based system, with the scheme also helping users monitor if devices need servicing or to be refilled with consumable items.
