Verizon FiOS receives upstream bandwidth boost matching download speed

updated 09:58 am EDT, Mon July 21, 2014

Free upload speed upgrades on Verizon FiOS over next few months

Verizon is updating its bandwidth tiers for FiOS, by giving customers higher uploading speeds. Starting from today onward for new and existing Verizon FiOS residential customers, the Internet provider will be upgrading lines at no extra charge, with subscribers being able to upload data at approximately the same speed as they are paying to download content.

Customers will see somewhere between two and five times the upload speed they had previously. Users on 15-megabit connections had 5Mbps upload speeds before, which has now changed to 15Mbps, a tripling of upstream bandwidth, The same can be said for the higher tiers, with the 150Mbps, 300Mbps, and 500Mbps tiers upgrading from respective upload rates of 65Mbps, 65Mbps, and 100Mbps to speeds equal to their respective download speeds.

The exact timing of each customer upgrade is unknown, except it will take place over the next few months into the fall, though customers enrolled in My Rewards+ will get the upgrade earlier. The upgrade will apparently take place automatically, without the need for subscribers to call in to make the change, and without resubscribing.

As for the reasons behind the change, the company notes a trend pointed out by research firm IDC, claiming that more than 20 percent of US broadband households are uploading nearly as much content as they download, and that these "Power User" households will grow by 60 percent by 2017. Verizon chief marketing officer Mike Ritter also cites the increase of connected devices, stating "As the Internet of Things becomes a reality, equal download and upload speeds will become essential."
