MacNN and Electronista Friday deals for July 25, 2014

It's that time of the week again, time for Friday Deals! Every Friday, we're going to take a look at current sales, and bring you what we think are some of the best bargains on prime apps, gadgets, and peripherals for you, the discriminating MacNN and Electronista reader. All prices are verified at the time of publication, but any sales may not be valid if you're reading a few days down the line. Check pricing before you click buy! We have a tendency to add deals over the weekend as we find them, so check back often!

Hardware

Daily deal site CowBoom.com has the first-generation Microsoft Surface tablet with Windows RT for $120 with free shipping. Yeah, it's Windows 8 RT, but it still makes a pretty nice e-book reader for el-cheapo Android tablet money.

Short on storage? Newegg has the Western Digital My Book 4TB USB 3.0 External Desktop hard drive for $129 after coupon code "EMCPCHE54" is applied. At this price, it's cheaper than the bare drive itself if sold separately, and may be a good candidate for "shucking" and re-using the contained SATA drive.

Anytime we spot name-brand, known-good SSD drives for under 50 cents a GB, we want you to know about it. Amazon has a good deal on the Crucial M550 512GB 2.5-Inch 7mm SATA SSD, model CT512M550SSD1. It's gotten rave reviews from buyers, comes with a 9.5mm drive adapter included for conventional notebooks, and costs only $244.29. It offers 550MB per second sequential reads, 500MB per second sequential writes, 95K random reads, and 85K random writes. If your notebook or ultrabook needs both space and speed, this is a good deal from a trusted brand.

If you need more SSD space, head over to Newegg.com, as they are beating Amazon's price for the big brother of the Crucial 512GB, the 1TB M550 (model CT1024M550SSD1). Using promo code EMCPCHF239 between now and July 30, this 2.5-inch 7mm 6Gb per second drive can be yours for $400, $50 off its normal price.

Peripherals

It's about time you started looking at media extenders for your television, isn't it? the Roku LT streaming player has been cut to $37 from $50 at Best Buy. Works great for Netflix and Pandora!

Also at Best Buy is the Harmon Kardon Onyx Studio Wireless Bluetooth Speaker. Once a $400 streamer, this excellent speaker has been reduced to $200.

For the cord-cutters comes the SiliconDust HD HomeRun Plus two-tuner DLNA/uPnP streaming media player. This device (with the addition of something as simple as rabbit ear antennas) will capture over-the-air broadasts and stream them to H.264 AVC format for playback on a wide variety of devices, including consoles, portable devices, and smart televisions. Who needs Aereo? The streamer has been cut $30 to $120.

Belkin is offering a steep discount on its Thunderstorm iPad Theater Speaker Case, now priced at $50 (down from the original $200). If you use your iPad 2, third-gen or fourth-gen iPad for playing games or watching videos frequently, this protective case combines the standard features of an iPad full-body cover with a full-range Bluetooth speaker that really enhances and amplifies the sound you would normally get from the iPad alone.

Software

Electronic Arts' Origin service has discontinued support for The Sims 2, but that doesn't mean that they don't want users to have it! Users on Origin can download the game (and what feels like 100 expansion packs) for free! Use code "I-LOVE-THE-SIMS" to redeem the offer in the Origin client.

Also free for a Facebook "like" is racing title GTR Evolution for Windows. GTR Evolution gives you a selection of 49 GT cars to drive across 19 tracks, and the original and included Race 07 package includes 32 additional tracks, and 300 cars to crash.

Need to do a mass mailing, and make it look nice? Equinux Mail Designer 2 has been cut on the Mac App Store to $17 from its original $30. If you regularly send out mass mailings for your company, group or club, this is a great offer.
