ComiXology starts offering DRM-free backups of digital comics

PDF, CBZ copies of Comixology purchases available to download

ComiXology, the digital comic book retailer owned by Amazon, is now allowing users to make backups of some downloaded comics. For a number of publishers, the service will make PDF and CBZ versions of comic book purchases free of any digital rights management (DRM), effectively letting customers view the comics they own in other reader apps.

Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con, ComiXology co-founder called the new addition "really bare-bones. We don't expect you to re-load it back into Comixology," reports CNET. "The plan is that we're always going to be the right place for you to buy and read your comics."

The initial wave of publishers offering backups include Image Comics, Dynamite Entertainment, Zenescope Entertainment, MonkeyBrain Comics, Thrillbent, and Top Shelf Productions, with smaller publishers and "Submit" creators also able to opt in to the service. It is unknown exactly how many of the more-than-75 publishers using ComiXology are taking part, nor how many of the 50,000 comics will be offered for backing up, but ComiXology did not mention whether Marvel and DC will be involved in the future.

ComiXology users can check if backups are available for their digital collection by going to the My Backups tab of My Books on the website.
