New MacBook Pros could be released on Tuesday

updated 09:20 am EDT, Mon July 28, 2014

Includes 13-, 15-inch refreshes

The MacBook Pro refreshes hinted at during the weekend may ship on Tuesday, according to a source for French site MacG. The updated 13-inch Pro is said to have a "J44a" model name, while its 15-inch counterpart is the "J45a." The source didn't have any specifications or prices to share.

Based on the earlier leak however 15-inch systems may get a boost in CPU speed, and come with 16GB of RAM by default, while maintaining their current prices. Any data on 13-inch models is unknown. During 2014, Apple has so far made just minor updates to the Mac lineup, something attributable to delays in Intel processors. It's rumored that a new 12-inch Retina MacBook could ship later this year, possibly as a variant of the Air; Apple may also be preparing a 4K iMac or monitor.

I personally do not see how a 12" model works in the lineup unless they discontinue one of the current sizes. I doubt apple wants to return to 1994 and having a large and confusing array of models again.

I would just make the air a single size at 12" retina and discontinue both 11 and 13" versions. The form factor of the retina 13" and the air at 13" is really close already that I think it looses it's ultra portable advantage and is only distinguising itself on price. If the air and MBP were both in retina displays at 13" I would suggest that the air no longer needs to exist at that size at the air goes back to a single size product like when it first arrived.

que_ball: I think that is precisely what the rumour has the company doing re: consolidating the Air into a single, 12-inch model.
