Uber closes Javascript hack exposing driver review of passengers

updated 09:40 am EDT, Mon July 28, 2014

Review score of customers by Uber drivers pulled from view

Cab-hailing service Uber has patched a hole which allowed passengers to find out their average score based on reviews from Uber drivers. A Javascript hack which surfaced over the weekend polled Uber servers for the passenger score, giving a response between 1.0 and 5.0, though Uber has been quick to close the loophole in order to protect its driver review system.

The original hack by Aaron Landy involved accessing the Uber mobile site, logging in, and repeatedly pasting the same code into the browser until a pop-up appears confirming the user's name, email address, and Passenger Rating score. Uber has since adjusted the response, so it will show the first two sections, but not the score itself.

While Uber keeps the user's score to itself and drivers, in order to warn of potentially troubling passengers, it doesn't do the same for ride reviews. Scores from passengers about their journey are available to view by drivers in their dashboard app, though Uber does withhold any text included with the review, and does attempt to anonymize ratings.
