MakerBot expands into Europe with German reseller acquisition

updated 03:58 pm EDT, Fri August 1, 2014

MakerBot Europe formed to manage Central, Eastern European 3D printer sales

MakerBot is making an expansion into Europe, by acquiring its largest reselling partner. A seller of MakerBot products in Germany for a number of years, Hafner's Büro has been rebranded as MakerBot Europe and will manage resellers of its 3D printer range across Central and Eastern Europe, with a view to covering more markets within the continent in the future.

ZDNet reports the new arm will be operated by Alexander Hafner, president and owner of Hafner's Büro and now general manager of MakerBot Europe. "I think it is a unique opportunity in both of our companies' histories," advised Hafner, continuing "We are excited to be able to take our 3D printing experience and years of working with MakerBot to expand that knowledge throughout Europe.

The company hopes current MakerBot resellers in Europe will be transitioned to working with MakerBot Europe in the next six months. The acquisition, the value of which is unknown, gives MakerBot a considerable head start in offering its products directly to customers on the continent.

While the Hafner's Büro website now directs to the Makerbot Europe page, it appears the products being sold are priced much higher than in the United States. A Replicator Mini costs $1375 in the United States, while in Europe it costs 1,599 euro ($2,145), with other MakerBot printers and accessories also having hefty prices in comparison to their US counterparts.
