Android overtakes iOS in global online usage tracking

updated 01:01 pm EDT, Mon August 4, 2014

Usage begins mirroring device ownership

For the first time, global usage of Android devices has surpassed that of iOS, according to Net Applications tracking data. iOS slipped from 45.61 percent in June to 44.19 percent in July, while Android advanced from 43.75 percent to 44.62. Windows Phone has made some more marginal progress, growing from below the 1 percent mark in April to 2.49 percent.

Android has enjoyed a sales advantage for some time, but traditionally iOS has recorded more online traffic. The new balance could be attributable to things like a greater prevalence of Android 4.x devices, improvements in app selection, and/or the iPhone being late into its update cycle. New iPhones should be announced next month.
