Microsoft offices in China burdened by new anti-trust raids

Raids focusing on financial data, other marketing information about Windows

New raids by the Chinese State Administration for Industry and Commerce against Microsoft have taken place, related to the ongoing antitrust investigation against the software giant. Raids on Microsoft took place yesterday in Beijing, Liaoning, Fujian, and Hubei, with a related event happening at Microsoft's financial firm Accenture in Dalian.

The raids are part of SAIC's investigation regarding Microsoft's Windows operating system and Microsoft Office. The complaint alleges Microsoft does not tailor to the Chinese market, and takes issue with bundling practices and document authentication. The probe has been met with some skepticism outside China, where it is seen as retaliatory for US espionage and the Microsoft buy of Nokia.

About the new round of raids, Microsoft said that "we're serious about complying with China's laws and committed to addressing SAIC's questions and concerns." Microsoft's accounting firm Accenture had a similar statement, saying that "we can confirm that, as required by Chinese laws, we are cooperating with investigators of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce and are helping provide them with certain information related to one of our clients."
