Preorders commence for wearable Sproutling Baby Monitor

updated 02:06 pm EDT, Thu August 7, 2014

New device said to be akin to GPS for new parents

The "Internet of Things" has expanded to childcare. The Sproutling wearable baby monitor has commenced pre-orders today, sending information on a child's heart rate, skin temperature, motion, and sleep position to a parent's mobile device. The associated charger gives yet more information, providing environmental data to parents in real time.

The company calls the Sproutling Baby Monitor the "first monitor capable of learning and predicting a baby's sleep habits and optimal sleep conditions." The device and software generates a profile for the child, rather than just providing context-free information which may panic a parent.

Examples given of context-aware data analysis by the monitor are estimating when the child will wake, telling parents if the baby's room is too loud or too warm, as well as making recommendations about the best time to put the baby to sleep. Additionally, the manufacturers claim that the device will alert parents to the baby's emotional state before they walk into the room, all information "aimed at making parenting a little easier" according to the company.

A limited time pre-order of the Sproutling Baby Monitor has started for $249, with the ultimate retail price coming in at $299. This is not a crowd-funded effort -- all orders ship in early 2015, a bit late for current babies, but just in time for newly-expectant parents. The initial release is only iOS compatible, with other mobile platform support due in the future.

Considering what a sucky job we already do with parenting in our society, I would argue we need less gadgets between us and our children, not more.

I like the implication in the video that you're never going to make another baby unless your kid has one of these on.

Better yet. I want my Iron Nanny so she can fly my kid to school while taking his heart beat pulse.
