Google, Barnes & Noble team in SF, NYC, LA for same-day delivery

updated 08:40 am EDT, Thu August 7, 2014

Offering expands existing Google Shopping Express program

On the heels of Amazon's same-day delivery expansion to New York City, Google and Barnes & Noble are teaming up to offer a similar service in Manhattan, West Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Bay Area. The offering, titled Google Shopping Express, allows users to get the bookseller's offerings, as well as other goods from local vendors, within just a few hours of ordering.

"It's our attempt to link the digital and physical," said Barnes & Noble CEO Michael P. Huseby. The offering differs from Amazon's, with Google-paid couriers collecting products from stores in the delivery area, as opposed to a central distribution office. Subscribers to the service get free delivery, with non-subscribers paying $5 per store per delivery. Membership is free, but the forthcoming subscription fee has not yet been announced.

"Many of our shoppers have told us that when they read a review of a book or get a recommendation from a friend, they want a really easy way to buy that book and start reading it tonight," Tom Fallows, director of product for Google Shopping Express said in a statement about the partnership with Barnes & Noble. "We think it's a natural fit to create a great experience connecting shoppers with their town's Barnes & Noble."

Google's same-day shopping service has already commenced with other vendors. No clear launch date for the parternship's offerings has been announced.
