Standalone Samsung smartwatch could be unveiled next month
The Gear Solo, a rumored standalone smartwatch in the Samsung Gear range, may be announced next month before the IFA tradeshow, according to a report. It is believed the company will use its Unpacked event on September 3rd to show the watch alongside other expected smartphone launches, including the Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Alpha.
According to sources of Yonhap News, the watch will retain the rumored Gear Solo name, and though it will be able to connect to a cellular network and accept a SIM card, it apparently won't have LTE access, instead using a slower 3G cellular connection. The Gear Solo will also allegedly work as a typical smartwatch, connected wirelessly to a smartphone and not using its own SIM.

Other than the cellular connection, it is likely the Gear Solo will have the same specifications as other Gear devices, such as the Gear 2 or the Gear 2 Neo. If so, it may use a 1.63-inch Super AMOLED 320x320 display powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor, with 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage, a heart rate sensor, and possibly a 2-megapixel autofocus camera.
