Microsoft continues creating low-cost mobile phones for emerging markets

After announcing a move away from its Android and Asha ranges, Microsoft's mobile phone arm has surprisingly launched another low-cost mobile phone. Following in the footsteps of the Nokia 105 and the Nokia 108, the Nokia 130 is a Series 30 device with basic functionality, which the company is pitching as a mobile phone for first time users, priced at 19 euro ($25) for both the single and dual-SIM models.

Equipped with a 1.8-inch 160x128 display, the Nokia 130 lacks the majority of typical features of modern phones, such as a camera. Able to accept microSD cards up to 32GB in size, it is able to play stored MP3s and MIDI files, while videos can be shared using its Slam function. While it connects over USB 2.0, Bluetooth 3.0, and 2G over cellular, it's 1,020mAh battery provides a maximum standby time of up to 36 days, with music playback of 46 hours, and a talk time of up to 13 hours.

While Microsoft aims to ship the Nokia 130 this quarter, it may not be the last basic phone to be announced. Speaking to Recode, Microsoft phone unit vice president Jo Harlow claimed the company was committed to the market for the long term, as it allowed Microsoft to offer cheap handsets at emerging markets. "Microsoft doesn't have any other project that can reach these consumers," advised Harlow.
