Collective has already released information on Ferguson police chief

[Updated with release of police respondent's name, which may be incorrect] Hacker collective Anonymous has allegedly penetrated the St. Louis County police dispatch computer system, and has released audio excerpts from the day that an unarmed African-American man was shot by police. The "OpFerguson" event underway by Anonymous has crippled Ferguson City's website, and already leaked some details about local police -- a very recent tweet by Anonymous has given the city very little time to respond, and has now released the officer's name involved in the shooting. However, the St. Louis police department claims the collective is wrong, and the person named is an "innocent citizen."

Details revealed by the group prior to the reveal of the shooter's name include the details of the police chief's house, and details of the IT infrastructure in the community. An interview with The Cryptosphere details some of the operation further, saying that the group mobilized very quickly after the shooting, and advocates to get further legislation passed reducing the military-like power of the police.

Pictures from the protests last night show a number of Guy Fawkes masks in the crowd, signifying some sympathy for what Anonymous is attempting to do. The street protests continue today, after Al-Jazeera's film crew was tear-gassed intentionally in the middle of a report on the demonstration, as well as a Washington Post reporter arrested by police in the area. Other journalists covering events on the ground have been similarly targeted.

St. Louis is a cesspool of racial crime and poverty. Can't say I'm surprised by a story like this.

Get your pitchforks ready -- it looks like we're gonna bypass due process altogether and just have ourselves an old-fashioned witch hunt.
