MS Developers: Internet Explorer's image tarnished, may change name

updated 12:59 pm EDT, Fri August 15, 2014

New IE 'not the one you remember' claim developers on Reddit.

Microsoft has had several discussions at high levels, according to reports, considering renaming the nearly two-decade old Internet Explorer browser. The move would be to distance the new versions from previous, flawed iterations, and would hopefully help to improve the image of the tarnished software. Also noted was that while there are tools for developers to test sites in Internet Explorer environments, there are no plans to make an OS X version of the browser.

Speaking of the name-change discussion, one developer said that they "remember a particularly long email thread where numerous people were passionately debating it. Plenty of ideas get kicked around about how we can separate ourselves from negative perceptions that no longer reflect our product today." The last time the matter was discussed, he revealed, was "just a few weeks ago."

Microsoft developers made the revelations at a Reddit "ask me anything" session earlier today. Also confirmed are steps to end support for some versions of Internet Explorer with deprecated ActiveX controls, to "reduce fragmentation" to assist outside developers. "It's okay to love us," said one IE developer. "The IE we work on is probably not the IE you remember."
