Sprint releasing Family Share Pack, offers special pricing, data caps

updated 10:00 pm EDT, Mon August 18, 2014

Limited-time plan offers up to 10 lines, bonus 2GB per line on promo 20GB plan

On top of a new single-line plan from Verizon today, Sprint has announced its new Family Share Pack, offering adjustable data caps to share across 10 lines in a single plan. Sprint's new plan also comes with a bonus for its 20GB tier, as the company is offering an additional 2GB per line on the plan as a part of its "new day for data" campaign.

Starting on August 22, Sprint will begin offering the new Family Share Pack, allowing smartphones and other mobile devices in a household to take advantage of the competitively-priced carrier plan. Customers are able to construct a plan around the Family Share Pack, offering data from 600MB to 60GB per month. A plan with 20GB will run customers only $100, with up to 10 lines sharing the pool.

On top of the high data caps, each of the price tiers under the Family Share Pack comes with unlimited text and talk on Sprint's network. However, there are some catches with the plan: each of the tiers has a flat rate, but there is also a per-device surcharge.

For non-discounted phones data plans from 600MB to 16GB, each data-enabled phone will cost $25 per month, Plans with 20GB to 60GB of data will pay $15 a phone instead. For discounted phones, the surcharge jumps to $40 a phone. Any tablet will be levied an additional $10, while a mobile broadband device will be charged $20.

"Sprint is offering the best value to data-hungry consumers, period," said Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure. "We are doubling the high-speed wireless data, because today's customers rely so much on their smartphones and tablets. We make it simple and easy for wireless consumers to get the data they need at affordable prices to make their lives easier, more productive and enjoyable. We are so certain that this is the best value on wireless today, that for any customer who wants to switch to our new Sprint Family Share Pack, we will reimburse them for the cost to end their contract with another carrier."

Under the new plans and as a part of the "new day for data" campaign from the company, Sprint is offering a number of perks. Additional data is being granted per line on activated accounts, especially for the 20GB tier, with up to the 10 lines allowed on the Family Share Pack. Each line is granted an additional 2GB, bringing the total data available to 40GB on the $100 plan Sprint is offering. The special pricing is confirmed to last at least through 2015.

To sweeten the deal, Sprint is offering bonuses to new customers that come from another carrier. Sprint will buy out a contact with a prepaid Visa card for up to $350. Plans signed up at the 20GB or above level will have the data access charges for devices waived. However, numbers must be transferred from the old carrier, and new devices must be purchased through Sprint Easy Pay.

Sprint's $100 20GB Family Share Pack plan will be available until September 30.
