Uber tests Corner Store same-day deliveries in Washington D.C.

updated 02:44 pm EDT, Tue August 19, 2014

Uber users can order from list of products for delivery to their location

Uber is testing potential delivery services again, by providing customers with goods from local retail outlets. Named Uber Corner Store, the experimental retail service will let Uber users request products from a list of over 100 items through the app, delivered shortly afterward to the customer by one of Uber's own fleet of drivers.

Through the Corner Store section of the app, the customer can select the delivery area within specific parts of Washington D.C. If a driver is available, a text confirmation will be sent, with the driver also calling up a few minutes before delivery to take the order. The list of items Uber is able to supply also lends itself to the nature of emergency or impromptu orders, with the majority of the list made up of health and hygiene-related products, though it does also list some candies, gift-wrapping materials, and padded envelopes.

According to the Uber blog, the service will be operational for a few weeks, from Monday to Friday between 9am and 9pm EDT, though the trial period could be extended further, as well as open later into the evening and on weekends. It will also have to contend with a similar same-day delivery service operated by Amazon.

In April, Uber started a new courier service in New York City called UberRush. Employing couriers working on foot or by bicycle, the service picked up objects from Uber customers for delivery elsewhere.
