updated 11:26 am EDT, Wed August 20, 2014

Sandisk first company besides Samsung to make TLC-based SSDs

Sandisk today announced the new SanDisk Ultra II SSD with enhanced SSD Dashboard. The new SATA-3, 2.5-inch drive ships in 120GB, 240GB, 480GB, and 960GB capacities, and is the first SSD outside of those manufactured by Samsung to use TLC flash media.

The new model is based on Sandisk's version of TLC, X3 NAND Flash technology. Also implemented is Sandisk's nCache 2.0 technology, which utilizes a two-tiered caching architecture to enhance drive speed and endurance. The controller uses the Marvell 88SS9187 chipset.

The drive features sequential read speeds of up to 550 MB per second, and write speeds of up to 500 MB per second across the line. Random read speeds vary between 81K IOPS for the 120GB model and 99K IOPS in the 960GB model. Random write speeds spam 80K IOPS at 120GB, with 83K IOPS for the 960GB version.

The SanDisk Ultra II SSD comes with a three-year warranty, and will be available online in September. It will be offered at price points of $80 (120GB), $115 (240GB), $220 (480GB), and $430 (960GB).
