Windows 9 announcement, developer preview rumored to come September 30

updated 02:24 pm EDT, Thu August 21, 2014

New OS will ultimately feature removal of charms, inclusion of Cortana

Microsoft has reportedly scheduled a September 30 preview date for the latest incarnation of its Windows operating system -- Windows 9. Rumored to be unveiled at the event is an early version of the system for developers, but it is not known if CEO Satya Nadella's espoused vision of "one OS" will come to fruition so early in his tenure.

Sources say that Microsoft will be quickly showing features from the release, with the technical preview available for developers immediately. A "public beta" version for enthusiasts is less likely, but possible. The release is expected to be similar to that of the Windows 8 reveal, with many features crippled, buggy, or competely non-existant.

The latest internal builds of Windows 9 "Threshold" contain early desktop versions of digital assistant Cortana, as seen in Windows Phone 8.1. The new mini start menu and bar should be on display as well.
