FCC filing shows Microsoft-designed Miracast HDMI peripheral

New device would receive video streamed from Windows Phone, PCs

Microsoft appears to be in the process of developing a Google Chromecast-like device. Filings with the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) show the software giant to be at least considering a HDMI dongle with Wi-Fi and a USB port, using Miracast to send content from a Windows device in a manner similar to Apple's Airplay. The device would fill an unserved market, with AirPlay only on iOS and OS X devices, and Google Cast on Android, iOS, and web apps.

Miracast, as it stands, lacks many of the features of Airplay or Google Cast -- in many ways, it more resembles Apple's link between a computer running iTunes and an Apple TV. Where Google Cast hands off the location of media to the Chromecast device, Miracast devices have content "pushed" to them by a serving device: a compatible Windows device, in Microsoft's case.

Whether or not Microsoft will actually ship the device remains to be seen. Many companies file devices with the FCC, only for them to not see the light of day, Microsoft being notorious for the practice. Also not known is the price point on any possible Microsoft streamer.
