Netflix competitor Shomi boasts 14,000 TV shows, 11,000 hours of programming
Canadian cable companies Rogers and Shaw are preparing to open up its own streaming video equivalent to Netflix later this year. Shomi is a subscription video-on-demand service which will provide movies and TV show streams, which the two companies plan to launch in the first week of November for an estimated $9 per month, the same cost as its competition.
The service will offer over 11,000 hours of TV programming, reports TechCrunch, with 14,000 individual shows and 340 series available to watch, along with 1,200 movies. Shows including Modern Family, American Horror Story, and Vikings will be available to watch, though in order to keep with regulatory guidelines, 30 percent of content on Shomi is Canadian. It also promises some time-limited exclusive content, with some "first-window premieres" planned.
Just as with Netflix, Shomi will work on iOS and Android mobile devices, various set-top boxes, the Xbox 360, and through the browser, with Rogers and Shaw TV customers likely to be able to access the streaming content through their cable boxes as well. Shomi will also provide up to six user profiles per account, one more than Netflix, though it will still only be limited to allowing two devices to stream movies at any one time.
Shomi will reportedly open as a beta just to Rogers and Shaw Internet or TV customers.
