Price cut in Surface 2 suggests stock clearance for another Microsoft tablet launch

Microsoft has cut the price of its Surface 2 Windows RT tablets by $100. The drop in price across the entire range, putting the 32GB, 64GB, and 64GB LTE versions at $349, $449, and $579 respectively, could be a sign that Microsoft is preparing to launch an updated version of the tablet to go alongside its already-released Surface Pro 3.

The reduction in price, spotted by Ars Technica, applies to the online and physical versions of the Microsoft Store, and some other retailers. It is noted that the $100 reduction is time-limited, running out on September 27th or "while stocks last," and that Microsoft is limiting the discount to a maximum of five Surface units per purchase, with the report suggesting some form of stock clearance. The ending in late September also matches closely to the September 23rd launch date of the Surface 2, which would be an apt time to launch the device.

The company surprisingly revealed just the Surface Pro 3 in May for a June release, despite rumors of a possible Surface Mini unveiling. It is even possible Microsoft could release the Surface Mini instead of the Surface 3 altogether.
