Spotify extends free music streaming option to Windows Phones

updated 02:50 pm EDT, Tue August 26, 2014

Shuffle play mode now available for Windows Phone 8.1, free version supported by ads

Subscripiton music streaming service Spotify has announced that it is bringing its free listening experience to Windows Phones beginning today. In today's software update, owners of phones like the Nokia Lumia 920 or the HTC One (M8) for Windows can now partake in the Spotify experience, with a few limitations. As with the expansion into a free version for Android and iOS in December, the offering is supported by in-app advertising.

"We're all about bringing more music to more people," said Spotify Director of Product Dave Price. "Today we're doing just that, by bringing the best free music experience to Windows Phone users across the globe."

With Spotify now offering a free, ad-supported version on Windows Phones, it gives users that might have been on the fence about paying for the service the ability to test it out. Spotify offers a number of different playlists and artists, with more than 20 million tracks available for listening.

The free version of the service doesn't give consumers true flexibility in what they listen to, though, as it's limited to a shuffle mode. However, any artist, album or playlist can be selected. For instance, if an artist is selected, users will be shuffled around their catalog. This is much different from services like Pandora, that might only let users to listen to the "subject" band a channel was made for once every 15 minutes. Users can still create playlists, or listen to curated lists from the company.

The change in the service still leaves Spotify Premium intact for Windows Phone users already subscribing to the service for $10 a month. However, the company did make a few changes to the app itself, including better search results and easier artist searching. The app can be downloaded now from the Windows Phone store.
