T-Mobile will discount some models of iPhone by $50 off full price
Starting on Wednesday, T-Mobile will offer a discount of up to $50 off the full price of all iPhones, according to a leaked internal memo. The offer will not affect subsidized iPhones, but applies to "device only" (no contract) sales. The discount will vary depending on the model and capacity, notes TmoNews, and is likely a reaction to recent price-cutting of contract phones by retailers like Walmart, which has dropped the price of the iPhone 5c to 97 cents and the iPhone 5s to $79 with a two-year contract.
Otterbox said to be exploring buyout, Goldman Sachs rates worth at $2.5 billion
Family-owned iPhone case and accessory maker Otterbox, well-known for its more protective lines of cases designed to make mobile devices nearly impervious to trauma, is said to have hired Goldman Sachs to manage a possible sale. The company is said to have a number of potential buyers that are interested in the company, which was originally founded in 1998 -- far ahead of the invention of the iPhone and the accessory market for it that has become its best-known line of products. Goldman Sachs believes a sale could bring in as much as $2.5 billion, including debt -- an unusually high estimate of what is essentially a well-regarded accessories company whose fortunes are closely tied to other companies' products.
