Also gains new Text and Shape Cutter tools, Smart Edges
Corel has released PaintShop Pro X7, a major upgrade of its photo-editing suite. The biggest addition is said to be Magic Fill, a Photoshop-like "content-aware" tool that can erase an object and replace it with content that matches the background, even if that background is varied. Several other tools have also been added, including Text and Shape Cutters -- used to create objects based on underlying images -- and Smart Edge, which prevents brush strokes from crossing lines.
A new Materials Palette includes something called Color Harmonies, which can offer suggestions on colors to use based on preset options. Many of the changes in X7 are in fact enhancements of previous features. A new image dialog, for instance, makes it simpler to specify the parameters of a new file, and brush performance should be up to 30 percent faster. Layers can now be dragged and dropped between images, and a variety of effects tools have been redesigned, such as Selective Focus, Smart Photo Fix, and Digital Noise Removal. XMP data can be read and imported.
The software is available in two editions, standard and Ultimate. The latter includes special correction and retouching tools, as well as an assortment of brushes, textures, and premade backdrops. Standard costs $80 new, or $60 as an upgrade. Ultimate is $100 new or an $80 upgrade.
