Apple officially announces September 9 press event [u]

Expected to feature iPhone 6, iWatch

(Updated with Bloomberg claims of iWatch debut) As anticipated, Apple has formally announced a September 9 press event. Unlike past fall events, however, this one will be held at the Flint Center for the Performing Arts in Cupertino, California, rather than the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco. It will begin at 10AM Pacific time, or 1PM Eastern.

It's generally believed that Apple will reveal two devices at the event, namely the iPhone 6 and the iWatch. The former may come in 4.7- and 5.5-inch sizes, and possibly support NFC-based mobile payments. The iWatch is forecast to have a range of health and fitness sensors, and pair with iPhones for functions like notifications and music control.

Based on past events, iOS 8 should reach the public on or shortly after the 9th, followed by the iPhone 6. Since Apple has never before made a product like the iWatch, it's not clear when that device might ship. To date, even small parts for it have yet to leak.

Update: Bloomberg, citing "a person with knowledge of the plans," says that during the September 9th event, "the Cupertino, California-based company will attempt to repeat [its success of the iPod, iPhone, and iPad] in wearables, an emerging group of devices that track people's activity and health. Apple will introduce a wearable gadget along with new iPhones."

"Wish we could say more" -- something about Siri and/or voice recognition, perhaps?
