Here mapping app for Android exclusive to Samsung
Nokia has made a deal with Samsung to provide Here Maps to its Android devices, as well as items running Tizen. Here for Android will be exclusive to Samsung's Galaxy smartphone line as a free download, while Tizen devices such as the Gear S smartwatch will be able to display maps on their small displays, as well as providing turn-by-turn navigation.
The free Here for Android app has the typical roster of mapping application functions, including route finding via different transportation methods, and searching for locations. Nokia is also offering downloadable maps for Here for offline navigation, with Here providing maps for almost 200 countries, and walking and driving turn-by-turn navigation for almost 100.
The app also includes Glympse, a mode which automatically shares the user's location in real time with friends for a period of time, and a Samsung Car Mode app which simplifies the phone UI to essential functions, controlled primarily by voice commands.
Here for Gear performs similar tricks to the smartphone version, with online and offline maps and turn-by-turn navigation. The smartwatch app is also able to synchronize data with the smartphone app, letting the user plan a journey on the larger-screened device before following the route using the watch.
Both the smartphone and smartwatch versions of Here will be made available to download once the Gear S ships.
