Sprint Wi-Fi calling update adds free calls to US when roaming

Wi-Fi calling international update added to Samsung Galaxy S4 with Sprint Spark

Sprint is updating its Wi-Fi calling service so that it can be used abroad at no charge. The carrier is allowing users of specific smartphones compatible with the service to make calls over Wi-Fi instead of a local mobile phone network while roaming, with calls made to the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico provided at no extra charge, and without using any call allowances.

While the calls to the US will be free, along with messaging services, calls to international numbers will still be chargeable. In a pricing table accompanying Sprint's press release, it does appear that users of Wi-Fi calling situated abroad will just get charged the international calling plan rates, with no additional charge for roaming, though this will not apply when using local carriers.

Sprint initially rolled out its Wi-Fi calling service in February, with the Samsung Galaxy Mega and Galaxy S 4 Mini being the first compatible devices, though it has also spread to 11 Android smartphones in total, though not yet to the iPhone. The new international update will be rolling out to the Galaxy S 4 with Sprint Spark, with others expected to receive the software update throughout the remainder of 2014.
