Event country, timing suggests first Android One devices due this month

Google has sent out invitations to an announcement event due to be held on September 15th in India. Though not specifically hinting at a product or service, it is believed the event will involve the launch of the first Android One smartphones, a program Google introduced in June to provide low-cost Android mobile devices to emerging markets.

The invitation received by NDTVGadgets advises there will be more details provided closer to the event's date, something which is likely to offer more of a direct hint at what is being launched, though the location is the biggest indicator for what it could be. Google's original announcement specified India as the first area to have the Android One smartphones, with devices due in the fall before a wider release towards the end of this year. Karbonn, Micromax, and Spice are launch partners for India, with the first release believed to have a dual-core processor, dual-SIM support, 3G connectivity, a 4.5-inch display, and a price below $100.

The Android One program requires manufactures to adhere to specific performance criteria in order to qualify under the scheme, with a stock installation of Android, automatic installation of apps from Google Play, and automatic updates from vendors being a few of the requirements. The strict controls should in theory ensure a basic level of quality for the handsets, though some could consider it a ploy for Google to maximize the user's time with its own range of apps and services before they have a chance to find alternatives to use.
